I know what you are thinking.  “Scones?  Isn’t that an English thing?”  Well, it was.  Allow me to explain.

Let’s take it back to 1987.  It was a more innocent time, when wars were Cold, the Nintendo NES was king, and Bon Jovi was livin’ on a prayer.  Fraternity brothers Thomas Owens and Ted Vogelman did what so many wild, young fraternity brothers do.  They started a bakery.

It all began in sleepy San Diego with fresh baked breads and pastries.  But Tom and Ted wouldn’t be satisfied.  Having mastered muffins, sticky pecan buns, cakes, cookies, and even cinnamon rolls, they started a secret project in 1989.  They wanted something exotic. Something to shake up the baked goods community. Somewhere, behind closed doors, these men developed something that had never been accomplished before.  When they emerged, they introduced the world’s first quick and easy, just add water, stir and bake, English scone mix. Before long, this mix was selling like, well, hotcakes. Ted and Tom knew that they were on to something. It was time to close up shop in San Diego and move to a culinary hotspot where they could work full time on this magical mix. Naturally, they chose Spokane, Washington.

By chance my wife and I received a package of Sticky Fingers Raspberry Scone Mix for Christmas last year. Not knowing what to make of it, the mix sat on our shelf for a few weeks. Finally, on one auspicious Sunday, they were made. We literally just added a little water, mixed them up and baked them. With minimal effort, they baked up hot, flaky, and utterly divine. I believe that we may have eaten them all in one sitting.

For someone like me, who is not inclined to prepare delicious baked-goods on their own, it was a great gift (that’s a hint).   But don’t take my word for it.  Try them yourself.  Once you do, you’ll question the authenticity of the jumbo scone-a-saurus offered by your local coffee chain.

Traditionally, the English serve scones with tea.  I say it’s time for us to shake off the yoke of our Imperial forefathers, claim scones as our own, and enjoy them any time we please.
